RVing is 100 Years Young
May 2010       Issue No. 67
100 years of RVing. In some ways, not much has changed, like the reasons we RV – camaraderie, adventure, love of the outdoors, setting our own pace – yet so much has changed with the technological advances that allow us to bring the comforts of home with us no matter how far we roam. As another year of RV travel beckons, we invite you to help us create a list of 100 most memorable RV moments, or if you don’t own yet, 100 reasons why you’d like to Go RVing.

2010 Is the Centennial Celebration of the RV Industry. America was founded by adventurers. Early Americans arrived by sea, but quickly set out across the country by horse-drawn wagons, which gave way to the advent of the automobile. Soon a motorized carriage with seats was not adequate for those with wanderlust, and the auto camper or RV was born. Historians agree the first commercially produced RVs debuted in 1910, so this year we celebrate the Centennial of the RV industry. In honor of our Centennial, Brad Herzog’s 2010 'From the Road' columns will carry 'top 100' lists related to the joys of RV travel – from most scenic drives to quirkiest museums, road trip songs to movies, and goofiest town names to small-town slogans. Got your list of memorable moments in your RV or reasons why you’d like to Go RVing? Send your favorites to info@gorving.org, and we’ll compile a national list of the Top 100 Reasons Why We Love to Go RVing that we’ll post later this summer.

As memorable as a road trip can be, sometimes the rural hamlets that we pass by are mere blurs. Even if you happen to be driving an RV with an expansive windshield offering a perfect view, you may miss a town entirely if you blink at the wrong time. That’s one reason towns adopt slogans. These phrases - often witty, sometimes descriptive, occasionally desperate - tend to be shouted from highway signs, identifying each community as a place of some significance, a destination worthy of consideration.

An American Journey Continues
Is it any wonder why RVs first captured the hearts of Americans? In the great land of opportunity, early auto campers and trailers were allowing the adventurous to travel farther, more comfortably and at their own pace. No longer confined to the railway routes, there were out-of-the-way places to be discovered. Car parks, the first campgrounds, sprung up across the country to provide travelers with safe places to stop, rest and converse with fellow travelers.

Hard to imagine that the early Tin Can Tourists’ portable, often one-pot meals were very tasty at all. Many were probably made with filling ingredients that wouldn’t spoil and were meant to sustain the road travelers rather than tantalize their taste buds. But in their honor, we’d like to offer an easy, prepare-ahead, one-skillet dinner with a little sweeter twist that’s great for the road. As you sit to enjoy this tasty dinner, just think of how easy cleanup will be, allowing you more time to enjoy the evening with your new campground neighbors.
